SMIP Missions Intern


In By the Book SMIP (Summer Missions Internship Program) we will work, live, pray and study God's Word together in a Mission House as we develop content that enables children to easily memorize Philippians and James.


Essential personal qualities:

  • Love and desire to serve God with all your heart soul mind and strength
  • Passion for God’s Word and sharing it with others
  • Calling from the Holy Spirit to serve with us this summer


Desired personal qualities:

  •  Work ethic: be able to maintain high-speed productivity with emotional and spiritual support from fellow Christians
  • Proactive: be able to see problems and fix them without being asked
  • Creative courage: be able to try new creative things and be ok with failure. That is where creative brilliance usually is. 
  • Teachable: Willingness to learn and take constructive feedback
  • Ability to have fun with your job :-)

SMIP Missions Intern:
The main job of mission interns is to carefully study James and Philippians, and then communicate the essence of each section to the production department, so they can find a way to explain God’s truth in a way children can understand. In addition, missions interns will help grow the SMIP's spiritual life and community by leading in spiritual activity and disciplines. This will include multiple hours daily of deep Bible study, prayer and worship. Missions interns must be flexible and relatively well rounded as they will be helping with various positions and tasks in order for the Mission House to run smoothly and efficiently. 


SMIP specialty positions include:

·          Composer

·       Sound Technician

·       Creative Director of Teaching Videos

·       Creative Director of Music Videos

·       Videography & Photography Director

·       Graphic Artist

·       Productivity Coordinator

·       Business Manager

·       Post Production Editor

·       App Programer/Web Developer



Composer

Goal:

By the end of this Summer, you (and your team) will have:

§  Composed and recorded accompaniments for each of those 40 songs

§  Found or composed background tracks for teaching and promotional videos

§  Transferred your compositions into Finale and taught your work to musicians

§ Accidentally memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish that, you should be able to:

 

§  Have enough creative ability that, from looking at a scripture passage, you can compose melodies that adequately portray the emotion God is trying to convey.

§  Have proficiency in Logic Pro and Finale (or be willing to learn quickly)

§  Have general knowledge about sound equipment

§  Know enough music theory/composition to adequately compose harmonies and accompaniments

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Playing around with the different emotion a piano versus a harpsichord would have on your composition

§  Studying the first eight verses of James to discover the main emotion God is trying to portray

§  Listening to other songs that create that same emotion, improvising a song to those verses, refining a melody for those eight verses

§  Figuring out that a bassoon was the best instrument to make a comical sound

§  Working with the sound technician and a singer to record your melody

 


Sound Technician

 

Goal:

By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Mastered and mixed roughly 40 audio tracks

§  Run an audio board for recording and filming sessions (indoor and outdoor)

§  Worked with composers to complete sound tracks for all music, teaching, and promotional videos

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish that, you should be able to:

 

§  Be proficient in sound equipment (or be willing to be trained). Our equipment includes: Logic Pro X, Universal Audio, Apollo 8x, and Apollo Twin

§  Have experience and knowledge in mastering, mixing and sweetening audio tracks

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Setting up audio equipment for a recording session

§  Mixing, editing, and sweetening 4 soundtracks

    

 

Creative Director (Teaching Videos)

 

Goal:

By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Created/brainstormed the concepts for roughly 80 three minute movies that explain the main concepts in the books of Philippians and James to a Kindergarten audience.

§  Story-boarded your ideas for those 80 videos

§  Created a book with discussion questions for parents to talk with their kids about the part of Philippians and James they are memorizing

§  Designed 10 fun games that help/encourage preschoolers memorize chapters of the Bible

§  Designed roughly 40 topical activities/games that illustrate the Biblical concepts shown in Philippians and James

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

    

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should:

 

§  Be an excellent storyteller

§  Be able to explain complicated theology in simple, funny stories

§  Have experience with kids so you can anticipate questions

§  Have the creativity to explore new/funny ideas that capture God’s message in a humorous way

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Talking with the postproduction editor to see if it would be reasonable to make it look like one of your actors was flying through a pile of Roman coins

§  Writing a simple, yet funny script for a story showing what it means to “do everything without complaining” and explaining it to a group of high school actors

§  Studying Philippians to find a way to address, through story, to a four year old girl, why the verse has the word circumcision

§  Pacing around the house melodramatically talking yourself in an Edwardian accent brainstorming a script for a video on joy

§  Deciding that having a sneezing, inflatable, yellow, hippopotamus slam into the wall is the best way to explain the concept of sin to a five-year-old in this context

 

 

Creative Director (Music Videos)

 

Goal:

By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Designed the visuals for roughly 40 music videos that put the books of Philippians and James to music

§  Directed a group of high school and preschool actors to implement your ideas every week on film day

§  Come up with funny hand motions/dance for each word of Philippians and James, for kids to watch and imitate

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

    

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should have:

 

§  Experience with kids so you can relate to their sense of humor and create visuals that captivate them

§  Tons of creativity so you can explore new/funny ideas that capture God’s message in a humorous way

§  The creativity to brainstorm dozens of different wild, out-of-the-box, crazy ideas on each frame, and yet decide on one. 

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Deciding that every time the video has the word “you” someone will pop off the side of the screen looking like Uncle Sam and point at the camera

§  Talking with the Post production editor to see if it would be reasonable to have confetti fly out of someone’s toes

§  Deciding to make the actors transform into princesses at the end of every chapter to motivate kids to memorize the whole chapter

§  Meeting with the creative team and brainstorming 14 really crazy/absurd ideas in order to find one really good idea on how to illustrate the word ‘trials’.

 

 

 

Videographer & Photography Director

Goal:

By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Designed the filming angles/mood for each shot in about 40 music videos and 80 teaching videos

§  Manned the camera and drone for roughly 10 filming days (about one per week)

§  Arranged and taken photographs for promotional purposes

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should:

  • General knowledge of camera and lighting equipment indoor and outdoor
  • Have an artistic eye/training enough to be able to make decisions on what zoom, focus and angle to use for each shot in order to make each frame aesthetically pleasing
  • Have film skills enough to choose different angles, zoom, and focus, depending on what mood is trying to be portrayed

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Working with the creative team to figure out if it is possible to get the head of a 7ft man, a sad caterpillar, and the sun in the same frame

§  Looking at a rough story board and deciding whether or not shot 7 needs to be zoomed in 4K or 1080p

§  Videoing a four year old as he recites three chapters of Matthew 

§  Figuring out how to make ‘diligently unloading the dish washer in obedience to your parents’ look like the most inspiring, epic conquest ever, through angles and lighting

 

 

Graphic Artist

Goal:

By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Illustrated, designed and provided graphics for a book of discussion questions helping kids understand the meaning of Philippians and James

§  Provided graphic art for promotional videos, flyers, and other marketing material

§  Advised teams on how to make everything they do visually artistic and aesthetically pleasing

§  Drawn roughly 120 cartoon coloring pages (one for each section of verses in Philippians and James)

§  Worked with the creative team to design each frame so that it is artistically pleasing

§  Accidentally memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should:

 

§  Be proficient in Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop (or quick and eager to learn)

§  Have an artistic eye that can design pages and characters to be positioned in the most aesthetically pleasing way

§  Be familiar with digital drawing with a stylus (We use apple pencil and iPad pro for drawing) 

§  Be able to replicate and draw specific cartoons in different positions with very animated expressions and emotions

 

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Creating graphics to a flyer that tells parents about the importance of Bible Memory for the Face Book page

§  Drawing a coloring page of a little boy with huge ears listening to his mommy in order to illustrate the verse about being quick to listen

§  Painting an artistic cartoon sun on a piece of wood for a stage prop

§  Photoshop editing and enhancing a picture of a cute kid for the website

§  Drawing a simple representation of the visuals from the music videos to put on cards for a memory review game

§  Worked with the creative team to decide what color prop umbrella would fit best in the frame to make it look artistically pleasing and then communicating that to the productivity team so they can buy the right umbrella

 

 

 

Productivity Coordinator

Goal:

By the end of the Summer, you will have:

 

§  Enabled people to be as productive as they can in their specific fields through organization and administration

§  Organized volunteers, actors, and singers for all filming days

§  Kept and replenished stock for all props as well as for food and household supplies.

§  Buying the necessary supplies to keep the production and house running

§  Coordinated all teams, schedules, and communication 

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should:

 

§  Have good writing/communication skills

§  Have lots of patience with volunteers and changing schedules J

§  Be a safe driver

§  Have flexibility be able to change plans and solve problems quickly

§  Have versatility and be able to pick up a wide variety of tasks to free up others to do their job more effectively

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Emailing a Christian high school to find more actors for the next day because one actor got sick

§  Comparing the prices/quality of a neon blue Egyptian pharaoh hat at Goodwill, a friend with a closet full of costumes, and Amazon.

§  Answering an email from a parent who wonders what version of the Bible we memorize in

§  Spontaneously reshuffling the schedule by adding a 15 minute snack break because the 4-year-old actor got nervous and decided to cry. 

§  Running to Costco to restock the fridges bacon supply J

 

 

 

Business Manager

Goal:

By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Overseen Interns and ensured efficiency of business operations 

§  Maintained and grown By the Book social media platforms

§  Managed finances and accounting for Internship expenses

§  Conceptualized and implemented creative marketing strategies

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should be:

 

§  Experienced at business writing and communication 

§  Proficient in social media marketing

§  Able to design and release promotional videos

§  Able to manage an account

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Analyzing how better we can save money on props by comparing different suppliers
§  Coming up with a new marketing campaign to target local preschools
§  Writing a post to our donors that explains our progress during the past week
§  re-working the website’s curriculum description page so it better targets our audience
§  Posting a 10 minute video of a kid reciting all of Matthew 5 on Facebook and responding to comments and questions

 

 

Post Production Editor

 

Goal:

By the end of this summer, you (and your team) will have:

 

§  Taken roughly 80 teaching videos, 40 music videos, and multiple promotional videos through the post production process

§  Chosen the best takes and edited them to match the artistic timing of the piece

§  Color corrected and added special effects to all 120 of those videos

§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James

    

Requirements:

In order to accomplish this, you should be:

 

§  Experienced (and fast!) with film editing software (or be willing to learn) - we are currently using Premiere Pro

§  Proficient in Adobe After Effects (or be willing to learn)

§  Able to choose the best between many takes

§  Able to artistically add cut-aways and extra funny shots without disrupting the flow and pace of the video

 

Kind of Work:

Examples of a typical work session might include:

 

§  Adding bouncing text to the bottom of the screen to help parents follow along with the words

§  Making a person look like they are getting rained on in a lightning storm

§  Piecing together four videos and choosing between 7 takes of each shot

§  Color correcting the shots in a video according to the mood

§  Combining the music track and sound effects with the rest of the video

 


App Programmer / Web Developer
 
Goal:
By the end of this Summer you (and your team) will have:
 
§  Collaborated with the creative team and designed an iOS Application.

§  Written and published an iOS app using Swift or React Native.

§  Written and published an Android app.

§  Updated the ByTheBookTheBible web site.
§  Designed and published an Android app.
§  Accidentally Memorized the books of Philippians and James
 

Requirements:

In order to accomplish that, you should be able to:
 
§  Be proficient in XCode and Swift programming (or willing to quickly learn).
§  Have an understanding of basic web design and web programming skills.

§  Be able to work with a creative team to design an application and web site.

 
Kind of Work:
Examples of a typical work session might include:
 
§  Working with the production team to format videos so they can be viewed on the site

§  Test the application on various devices and environments.

§  Fixing the screen layout so it works in a landscape mode 

§  Working with the creative team to implement a design where buttons bounce when hovered over and sparkle when clicked on
